[He] said, 'This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes,' meaning their emergence, 'He will make it,' meaning the dam, 'level with the ground.' Qatada said: 'Meaning, it will collapse, parts of it upon others.' It is read in another manner as 'dak'a' (prolonged/dakka'), meaning: He will make it a level plain.

Yahya, from Sa'id ibn Abi 'Aruba, from Qatada, from Abu Rafi', from Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 'Verily, Gog and Magog dig through it every day until, when they are about to see the rays of the sun, the one in charge of them says, "Go back, for you shall dig it tomorrow." So Allah restores it to being as strong as it was, until when their time is reached and He intends to send them upon the people, they will dig until, when they are about to see the rays of the sun, the one in charge of them says, "Go back, for you shall dig it tomorrow, if Allah wills." So they return to it in the morning, and it is in the same state as when they left it.'
