His saying: "And We sent down to you the Manna."
[The first interpretation]
551 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri narrated to us from Sufyan, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr, from 'Amr ibn Hurayth, from Sa'id ibn Zayd, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out to us with a truffle in his hand and said: "Do you know what this is? This is from the Manna which Allah sent down upon the Children of Israel, and its water is a cure for the eye."
552 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Manna used to descend upon them (at night) onto the trees, and they would go to it in the morning and eat from it as much as they wished.

553 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Yahya ibn Yaman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "And We sent down to you the Manna and the Salwa (quail)," he said: The Manna is a resin.
[The third interpretation]
554 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani narrated to me, Hafs ibn 'Umar al-'Adani reported to us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah, he said: The Manna is something Allah sent down to them like dew, similar to thick molasses.
555 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: They said: "O Moses, how are we to manage with what is here? Where is the food?" So Allah sent down the Manna upon them, and it would fall upon the tree of taranjabin (manna of Hedysarum).
556 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Bashir informed me, from Qatadah regarding the saying of Allah: "And We sent down to you the Manna," he said: The Manna would fall upon them in their encampment like the falling of snow, whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. It would fall upon them from the rising of the dawn until the rising of the sun. A man among them would take as much as would suffice him for that day, and if he exceeded that, it would spoil and not remain. When it was the day of his sixth day, he would gather what would suffice him for his sixth day and his seventh day, because it was a day of 'Eid (festival) in which he would not go out for his livelihood nor for anything he sought. And this was all in the wilderness.

٥٥١ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئِ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ حُرَيْثٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَفِي يَدِهِ كَمَأَةٌ فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ مَا هَذَا؟ هَذَا مِنَ الْمَنِّ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَمَاؤُهَا شِفَاءٌ لِلْعَيْنِ «١» .
٥٥٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كَانَ الْمَنُّ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِمْ (بِاللَّيْلِ) «٢» عَلَى الأَشْجَارِ فَيَغْدُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَيَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ مَا شَاءُوا.

٥٥٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَمَانٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ عَنِ مُجَاهِدٍ «٣» وَأَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَنَّ وَالسَّلْوَى قَالَ: الْمَنُّ صَمْغَةٌ
الْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
٥٥٤ - حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الطِّهْرَانِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ ثنا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ أَبَانَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ: الْمَنُّ شَيْءٌ أَنْزَلَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِثْلُ الطَّلِّ، شِبْهُ الرُّبِّ الْغَلِيظِ.
٥٥٥ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَمَّادِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: قَالُوا يَا مُوسَى، فَكَيْفَ لَنَا بِمَا هَاهُنَا، أَيْنَ الطَّعَامُ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَنَّ، فَكَانَ يَسْقُطُ عَلَى شَجَرَةِ الزَّنْجَبِيلِ «٤» .
٥٥٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا صَفْوَانُ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ «٥»
فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَنَّ قَالَ كَانَ الْمَنُّ يَسْقُطُ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي مَحِلَّتِهِمُ سُقُوطُ الثَّلْجِ، أَشَدُّ بَيَاضًا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَأَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ، يَسْقُطُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ، إِلَى طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ، يَأْخُذُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْهُمْ قَدْرَ مَا يَكْفِيهِ يَوْمَهُ ذَلِكَ، فَإِذَا تَعَدَّى ذَلِكَ فَسَدَ وَلَمْ يَبْقَ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ سادسه ليوم جَمَعْتُهُ أَخَذَ مَا يَكْفِيهِ لِيَوْمِ سَادِسِهِ وَيَوْمِ سَابِعِهِ لأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ لَا يَشْخَصُ فِيهِ لأَمْرِ مَعِيشَتِهِ وَلا لِشَيْءٍ يَطْلُبُهُ، وَهَذَا كُلُّهُ في البرية.
