His saying: ""'Awan (middle-aged) between that, so do what you are commanded."

[The First Aspect]

699 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us from Abu Rawq from al-Dahhak from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "'Awan" [he said]: "Between the young and the old; it is the strongest of beasts and cattle and the finest that they can be." Abu Muhammad said: It has been narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, Mujahid, al-Rabi' ibn Anas, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, Qatadah, al-Dahhak, and 'Ikrimah something similar to that.

700 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi, who said: "The 'Awan is the middle, which is between that; one that has given birth and its offspring has also given birth."

701 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, 'Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, Khusayf reported from Mujahid regarding His saying: "neither Fard nor Bikr" [he said]: "Neither young nor old, that has given birth to one or two calves."

[The Second Aspect]

702 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us from 'Abbad ibn Mansur from al-Hasan: "'Awan between that," meaning between the aged and the young, "so do what you are commanded."

His saying: They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what its color is."

703 - It was mentioned to me from 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak: "Call upon your Lord," he said: "Ask your Lord to make clear to us what its color is."

His saying: He says, "Indeed, it is a cow."

704 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl al-Harrani narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us from Juwaybir from Kathir ibn Ziyad from al-Hasan, regarding the cow, he said: "It was a wild cow."

His saying: "Yellow"

As for those who interpreted it as being yellow in color:

705 - My father narrated to us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman ibn al-'Adhra' narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj from 'Ata' from Ibn Abbas, who said: "Whoever wears yellow sandals will remain in joy as long as he wears them, and that is the saying of Allah: 'Yellow, its color is bright, pleasing the observers.'"
