797 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us from 'Abbad ibn Mansur from al-Hasan: regarding His saying: "And among them are illiterate ones who do not know the Book except in wishful thinking, and they are only assuming," he said: These are people from the Jews who did not know anything of the Book as Allah stated, so they would speak based on assumptions other than what was in the Book of Allah, and they would say: "It is from the Book," [being merely] wishful thinking they would hope for.

His saying: "Woe"

798 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la al-Misri narrated to us, Ibn Wahb informed us, 'Amr—meaning ibn al-Harith—informed me from Darraj from Abu al-Haytham from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "Woe is a valley in Hell, into which the disbeliever falls for forty autumns before reaching its bottom."

799 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us from Sufyan from Ziyad ibn Fayyad, who said: I heard 'Iyad saying: "Woe" is a torrent of pus at the base of Hell.

800 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Mubarak informed us, Sa'id ibn Abi Ayyub informed us from Ibn 'Ajlan from Zayd ibn Aslam from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, who said: "Woe" is a valley in Hell; if mountains were sent into it, they would melt from its heat.

His saying: "to those who write the Book"

801 - Ahmad ibn 'Amr ibn Abi 'Asim al-Nabil narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Abu al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad narrated to me, Shabib ibn Bishr informed us from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas: "to those who write the Book with their own hands," he said: They are the scholars (ahbar) of the Jews.

802 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: regarding His saying: "to those who write the Book with their own hands," he said: Some people among the Jews would write a book and sell it to the Arabs.

His saying: "with their own hands"

803 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: "with their own hands," he said: From themselves.
