reciting them to them, O Muhammad, informing them morning and evening, and in between. You are among them as an unlettered man, having read no book nor been sent as a messenger, yet you inform them of what is in their hands regarding its truth and reality. He says: In that for them is a lesson and a clear explanation, and upon them is a proof, if only they had understood.
958 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: "Confirming what is before it," meaning from the Torah and the Gospel. It was narrated from Qatadah and al-Rabi' similarly to what was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah.
His saying: "And guidance and glad tidings for the believers."
959 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Guidance and glad tidings for the believers," Allah made this Quran: guidance and glad tidings for the believers. This is because the believer, when he hears the Quran, memorizes it, and grasps it, benefits from it, finds tranquility in it, believes in what Allah has promised, and attains certainty regarding that.
His saying: "Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Jibril, and Mika'il, then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers."
960 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Mujalid, 'Amir informed us, saying: 'Umar went to the Jews and said: "I adjure you by Him who revealed the Torah to Musa, do you find Muhammad in your books?" They said: "Yes." "Then what prevents you from following him?" They replied: "Allah does not send a messenger except that He grants him a share from the angels, and Jibril is the share of Muhammad; he is the one who comes to him, and he is our enemy among the angels. Mika'il is our source of peace; if Mika'il were the one who came to him, we would have surrendered." He said: "I adjure you by Allah who revealed the Torah to Musa, what is their status from the Lord of the worlds?" They said: "Jibril is on his right, and Mika'il is on his left." 'Umar said: "I bear witness that they do not descend except by the permission of Allah, and Mika'il would not be at peace with the enemy of Jibril, and Jibril would not be at peace with the enemy of Mika'il." While he was with them, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed by. They said: "That is your companion, O son of al-Khattab." 'Umar stood up and went to him, and it was then that Allah revealed concerning him: "Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Jibril, and Mika'il, then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers."
