"A party of those who were given the Scripture threw the Book of Allah behind their backs, as if they did not know."
"And they followed the desires that the devils used to recite, which are musical instruments, play, and everything that distracts from the remembrance of Allah."
985 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding the word of Allah: "And they followed what the devils recited," he said: "The Jews asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about magic and disputed with him regarding it, so Allah revealed: 'And they followed what the devils recited' to the end of the verse. The devils wrote magic and divination and buried it in the seat of Solomon. Solomon did not know the unseen. When Solomon died, they extracted that magic and deceived the people with it, saying: 'This is knowledge that Solomon used to hide from the people and was envious of them for.' When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed them of these verses, they retreated in disgrace, and Allah refuted their argument."
986 - al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar al-Wasiti narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to me, from 'Abbad ibn Mansur, from al-Hasan: "And they followed what the devils recited during the kingdom of Solomon." The Jews followed it during his kingdom. Magic existed on the earth before that and has always remained, but it was only (in this context) followed during the kingdom of Solomon."
987 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "And they followed what the devils recited during the kingdom of Solomon." He said: "The devils would ascend to the heaven and sit in places to listen, hearing the speech of the angels regarding what would occur on earth, such as death, the unseen, or other matters. They would come to the soothsayers and inform them. The soothsayers would then tell the people, who would find it to be as they said. Once the soothsayers gained their trust, they lied to them and inserted other things into it, adding seventy words to every word. People wrote that talk in books, and it became widespread among the Children of Israel that the jinn knew the unseen. So Solomon sent messengers to the people, collected those books, placed them in a box, and buried it under his throne. No devil was able to approach the throne without being burned."
988 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah ibn Ishaq narrated to us: "And they followed what the devils recited during the kingdom of Solomon," meaning: in the kingdom of Solomon. This refers to the Jews who said what they said.
