1021 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, al-Rabi' ibn Anas narrated to us, from Qays ibn 'Abbad, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "Harut and Marut were sent down to the earth. When someone came to them seeking magic, they would forbid him most strongly. If he persisted against them, they would command him to go to such-and-such a place. When he reached it, he would see the shaytan and learn from him. Once he learned it, the light would exit him, and he would see it glowing in the sky. He would then say: 'Alas! Woe to him! What have I done?'"
1022 - Al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman narrated to us, by dictation, 'Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrated to me, Hisham ibn 'Urwah narrated to me, from his father, from 'Aishah, that she said: 'A woman from the people of Dumat al-Jandal came to me seeking the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after his death, while it was still recent, asking him about a matter regarding magic that she had entered into, though she had not yet practiced it. She said: "We stopped at Babel and found two men hanging by their feet. They said: 'What brought you?' I said: 'I have come to learn magic.' They said: 'We are but a trial, so do not disbelieve and go back.' I refused and said: 'No.' They said: 'Go to that oven and urinate in it.' I went, was terrified, did not do it, and returned to them. They said: 'Did you do it?' I said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Did you see anything?' I said: 'I did not see anything.' They said: 'You did not do it. Return to your country and do not disbelieve.' I persisted and refused. They said: 'Go to that oven and urinate in it, then come back.' I went, but my skin crawled, and I was afraid. I returned to them and said: 'I have done it.' They said: 'What did you see?' I said: 'I did not see anything.' They said: 'You lied, you did not do it. Return to your lands and do not disbelieve, for you are still on the verge of your faith.' I persisted and refused. They said: 'Go to that oven and urinate in it.' I went and urinated in it. I saw a horseman clad in iron emerge from me, go into the sky, and disappear from me until I could no longer see him. I came to them and said: 'I have done it.' They said: 'What did you see?' I said: 'I saw a horseman clad in iron emerge from me and go into the sky until I could no longer see him.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth; that was your faith exiting you. Go.'"
