His saying: "Of a verse"

[The first interpretation]

1055 - Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Whatever We abrogate of a verse," he said: "We retain its script and replace its ruling." It was narrated to me from the companions of 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud. A similar view was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah and Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi.

The second interpretation:

1056 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata': "(Whatever We abrogate of a verse)," refers to what was abrogated regarding that which was left out of the Quran. Abu Muhammad [Ibn Abi Hatim] said: "He means it was left out and not revealed to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."
