al-Sa'di, who was one of the companions of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), said: The Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A man does not truly become one of the God-fearing (al-muttaqin) until he leaves that which is not harmful out of caution against that which is harmful."
The second interpretation:
61 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Imran narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Sulayman al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Mughirah ibn Muslim, from Maymun, from Abu Hamzah, who said: I was sitting with Abu Wa'il when a man named Abu 'Afif, one of the companions of Mu'adh, entered upon us. Shaqiq ibn Salamah said to him: "O Abu 'Afif, will you not narrate to us about Mu'adh ibn Jabal?" He replied: "Yes, I heard him say: 'People will be detained on the Day of Resurrection in one flat land, then a caller will call out: "Where are the God-fearing (al-muttaqin)?" They will stand in the shelter of the Most Merciful; Allah will not veil Himself from them, nor will He hide."' I asked: "Who are the God-fearing (al-muttaqin)?" He said: "A people who feared polytheism and the worship of idols, and made their worship sincere to Allah; they will pass [safely] to Paradise."
The third interpretation:
62 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj reported to us, Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: Concerning what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thabit, narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Allah, the Exalted and Praised, says: "Guidance for the God-fearing (hudan lil-muttaqin)," meaning those who fear Allah and His punishment for abandoning the guidance they know, and hope for His mercy by believing in what has come from Him.
The fourth interpretation:
63 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah al-Qannad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "Guidance for the God-fearing (hudan lil-muttaqin)" means light for the God-fearing, and they are the believers.
64 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray', Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to me, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Guidance for the God-fearing," who are they? Allah described them, and confirmed their characteristics and description. He said: "Those who believe in the Unseen."
His saying: "Those who believe"
65 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Those who believe in the Unseen," meaning they are the believers from among the Arabs.
