The second interpretation:
1694 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "the limits of Allah": it means His conditions.
1695 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu‘adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, ‘Ubayd ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from al-Dahhak regarding "These are the limits of Allah," he said: "Disobeying Allah, meaning: the association [intercourse] during i’tikaf." It is also reported from Muqatil similarly to the statement of al-Dahhak.
His saying: "So do not approach them."
1696 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma‘ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan: "So do not approach them," meaning: sexual intercourse.
His saying: "Likewise."
1697 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to me, ‘Ata’ ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah the Almighty: "Likewise," meaning: thus does Allah make clear His signs.
His saying: "Likewise does Allah make clear... to... they may become righteous."

1698 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma‘ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Likewise does Allah make clear His signs to the people that they may become righteous [by refraining from] sins: and upon every person in i’tikaf is fasting as long as he remains in i’tikaf."
The second interpretation:
1699 - Musa ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Masruqi narrated to us, Abu Dawud al-Hafari narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "that they may become righteous," he said: "That they may be obedient."
His saying: "And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly."
