His saying: "And you forget yourselves."

479 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: In what Ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And you forget yourselves," meaning: You abandon yourselves.

[His saying: And seek help through patience and prayer]

480 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us, he said: They narrated to us—meaning Ibn Abi Najih—from Mujahid, [regarding] His saying: "And seek help through patience [al-sabr]," he said: Patience is fasting.

481 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah, who says: "Seek help through patience and prayer" in attaining the pleasure of Allah, and know that it is [a form] of obedience to Allah.

482 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Asadi, who says: "Seek help through patience" [refers to] fasting.

483 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan ibn Salih narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf informed me, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, [regarding] His saying: "And seek help through patience and prayer," he said: Seek help in seeking the Hereafter through patience in [performing] the obligatory duties and prayer.

Abu Muhammad [Ibn Abi Hatim] said: I heard Abu Bakr Habash ibn al-Ward al-Baghdadi in Mecca, and he asked his companions about patience: What is it? Some of them said: It is prayer, and they cited as proof the saying of Allah: "And seek help through patience and prayer." He said: Allah has distinguished between the two, for He said: "Seek help through patience and prayer," and He did not make it [patience] prayer, but rather made them two [separate] things. Some of them said: Patience is fasting. Others said: Patience is to be patient over a matter. He said: What is the meaning of "to be patient"? He was not satisfied with anyone's answer. They asked him to inform them, so he said: Patience is steadfastness in a matter.

484 - My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Hamzah ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Abu Sinan, from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: Patience is of two types: patience during a calamity is good, and even better than that is patience in abstaining from what Allah has forbidden. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from al-Hasan similarly to the saying of 'Umar.

485 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Ata' ibn Dinar, that Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: Patience is the servant's acknowledgment to Allah of what has befallen him, seeking its reward from Allah, and hoping for His recompense. A man may be distressed, yet he restrains himself, and nothing is seen from him except patience.
