His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Allah is sufficient for me.'"

18396 - Ahmad ibn 'Isam al-Ansari narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn Bakr al-Sahmi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Hatim narrated to us, from Abu al-Miqdam—a freedman of the family of 'Uthman—from Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi: Ibn Abbas narrated to us—raising the hadith to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he said: "Whoever loves to be the strongest of the people, let him rely upon Allah. Whoever loves to be the wealthiest of the people, let him be more confident in what is in the hand of Allah than what is in his own hands. And whoever loves to be the most honorable of the people, let him fear Allah."

His saying, the Exalted: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death."

18397 - From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death"—the verse—he said: "There is a soul (nafs) and a spirit (ruh); between them is something like the rays of the sun. Allah takes the soul during its sleep and leaves the spirit in its body and interior, so it moves and lives. If Allah intends to seize him, He seizes the spirit and he dies. Or, if He delays his term, He returns the soul to its place in his interior."

18398 - From Sulaym ibn 'Amir that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "I am amazed by a person's dream; he spends the night and sees something that never crossed his mind, and it turns out to be a dream as clear as holding it in one's hand. Yet a man may see a dream, and his dream turns out to be nothing!" Ali ibn Abi Talib said: "Shall I not inform you about that, O Commander of the Faithful? Allah, the Exalted, says: 'Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die in their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term.' So Allah takes all the souls. Whatever it sees while it is with Him in the heaven, that is the true dream. But whatever it sees when it is released to its bodies, the devils meet it in the air and lie to it, informing it of falsehoods, so it is a lie." 'Umar was amazed by his statement.

18399 - From Abu Ayyub that he heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he was staying at his house, as he was about to sleep, he said some words we did not understand. He said: "So I asked him about that, and he said: 'O Allah, You take the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die in their sleep. You keep those for which You have decreed death and release the others for a specified term. You created me, and You take my soul. If You take my soul, forgive me; and if You grant me life, protect me.'"
