His saying, the Almighty: "And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil."
18505 - From Muhammad ibn 'Uthman al-Makhrami that the Quraysh said: "Appoint a man for every man among the companions of Muhammad to seize him." So they appointed Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah for Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. He came to him while he was among the people. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "To what do you invite me?" He said: "I invite you to the worship of al-Lat and al-'Uzza!" Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "And what is al-Lat?" He said: "Our Lord." He said: "And what is al-'Uzza?" He said: "The daughters of Allah." Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Then who is their mother?" Talhah fell silent and did not answer him. Talhah said to his companions: "Answer the man!" But the people fell silent. Talhah said: "Rise, O Abu Bakr. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." So Allah revealed: "And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil"—the verse. (1)
