His saying, the Almighty: "[Cruel -] after that, an illegitimate person."
18941 - From al-Qasim, the freedman of Mu'awiyah, and Musa ibn 'Uqbah, both said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was asked about the 'utul zanim, and he said: "It is the obscene, ignoble person."(1)
18942 - From Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The 'utul is the one who claims what is not his (da'iyy), and the zanim is the suspicious person who is known for evil.(2)
18943 - From Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The zanim is the man who passes by a group, and they say: "[He is a] man of evil."(3)
18944 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "[Cruel -] after that, an illegitimate person," he said: "A man from Quraysh who had an extra flap [of skin] like the flap of a sheep, by which he was known."(4)
His saying, the Almighty: "A defamer."
18945 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "the contemptible," he said: "The liar." [Regarding] "defamer," he meant: backbiting. [Regarding] "cruel (utul)," he said: "The harsh [one]."(5)
18946 - From 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), he said: "Whoever dies as a defamer and a backbiter, meeting people [with such traits], his mark on the Day of Resurrection will be that Allah brands him on the nose from both corners of the mouth."(6)
His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, We have tested them as We tested the companions of the garden."
18947 - From Ibn Jurayj, that Abu Jahl said on the Day of Badr: "Seize them, take them, and tie them in the mountains, and do not kill any of them." Then [this] was revealed: "Indeed, We have tested them as We tested the companions of the garden," meaning: in their ability over them, just as the companions of the garden had ability over the garden.(7)
18948 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "as We tested the companions of the garden," he said: "They were people from Ethiopia whose father had a garden, and he used to feed the beggars from it. Then their father died, and his sons said: 'If our father was not a fool, he would not feed the poor,' so they swore to harvest it in the morning and not to feed any poor person."(8)
