Sūrat al-Muzzammil

73

His (Exalted is He) saying: "O you who are wrapped in garments (al-Muzzammil)"

19010 - Ibn Wakīʿ narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Ḥubāb narrated to us, and Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, Mihrān narrated to us—they both said, and the wording is that of Ibn Wakīʿ, from Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah, Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: I used to make a mat for the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) to pray upon at night. The people heard of it and gathered. He came out as if angry, though he was merciful towards them, for he feared that night prayer would be prescribed for them. He said: "O people, take upon yourselves such deeds as you are able to bear, for God does not tire of rewarding until you tire of performing deeds. The best of deeds is that which is continued consistently." Then the Quran was revealed: "O you who are wrapped in garments, rise the night except for a little, half of it, or subtract from it a little, or add to it," until a man would tie a rope and hold onto it. They remained in that state for eight months. God saw that they sought His pleasure, so He had mercy on them and returned them to the obligatory [prayer] and left the night prayer [optional].

19011 - Abū Zurʿah narrated to us, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī narrated to us, Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Zurārah ibn Awfā, from Saʿd ibn Hishām, who said: I said—meaning to ʿĀʾishah—inform us of the night prayer of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) and his companions until their feet swelled, and the latter part of it was held in the heaven for ten months, then it was revealed.

19012 - My father narrated to us, ʿAmr ibn Rāfiʿ narrated to us, Yaʿqūb al-Qummī narrated to us, from Jaʿfar, from Saʿīd—that is Ibn Jubayr—who said: When God revealed to His Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace) "O you who are wrapped in garments," the Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace) remained in this state for ten years, rising at night as He commanded him, and a group of his companions would rise with him. Then after ten years, God revealed to him: "Indeed, your Lord knows that you stand [in prayer] more than two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and a group of those with you," until His saying: "And establish prayer," so God (Exalted is He) lightened it for them after ten years.
