19013 - From ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Quran was revealed: "O you who are wrapped in garments, rise the night except for a little," until a man would tie a rope and hold onto it. They remained in that state for eight months. God saw that they sought His pleasure, so He had mercy on them and returned them to the obligatory [prayer] and left the night prayer [optional].

19014 - From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When the beginning of [Sūrat] al-Muzzammil was revealed, they used to stand [in prayer] for a duration similar to their standing in the month of Ramaḍān, until its end was revealed. Between its beginning and its end was about a year.

19015 - From Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, regarding His saying: "O you who are wrapped in garments," he said: It was revealed while he was [wrapped] in a velvet cloak.

His (Exalted is He) saying: "And recite the Quran with measured recitation (tartīlan)."

19016 - From Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding His saying: "And recite the Quran with measured recitation," he said: Make it clear and distinct.

His (Exalted is He) saying: "Rising by night (nāshiʾat al-layl)."

19017 - From Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who said: I asked Ibn ʿAbbās and Ibn al-Zubayr about the "rising by night" (nāshiʾat al-layl); they both said: It is the night prayer.

19020 - From Ibn Masʿūd, regarding His saying: "Indeed, the rising by night," he said: It is, in the Abyssinian language, the night prayer.

His (Exalted is He) saying: "Prolonged occupation (sabḥan ṭawīlan)."

19021 - From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The occupation (sabḥ) is various types [of activities] for needs and sleep.

His (Exalted is He) saying: "Indeed, with Us are shackles and a burning fire."

19022 - Through the chain of Ḥimrān ibn Aʿyan, from Abū Ḥarb ibn Abī al-Aswad, that the Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace) heard a man reciting "Indeed, with Us are shackles and a burning fire," and he fell into a swoon.
