His saying, the Almighty: "I have wasted wealth in abundance," up to His saying: "Does he think that no one has power over him?"
19317 - On the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk regarding His saying: "I have wasted wealth in abundance," he said: I have spent wealth in blocking the path of Allāh. Regarding "Does he think that no one has power over him?" he said: The "One" [al-Aḥad] is Allāh, the Almighty and Exalted.
19318 - On the authority of Ibn Jurayj regarding His saying: "He says: I have wasted wealth in abundance," he said: Does he boast against us, saying that we have not bestowed upon him anything better? "Have We not made for him two eyes," and so on.
His saying, the Almighty: "Have We not made for him two eyes?"
19319 - On the authority of Qatādah regarding "Have We not made for him two eyes?" he said: Blessings from Allāh that are manifest; He uses them to confront us so that we may give thanks.
His saying, the Almighty: "And We guided him to the two highways [al-Najdayn]"
19320 - On the authority of Ibn Masʿūd, may Allāh be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And We guided him to the two highways," he said: The path of good and evil.
19321 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, regarding "And We guided him to the two highways," he said: Guidance and misguidance.
19322 - On the authority of Anas, may Allāh be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allāh, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said: "They are two highways, yet He did not make the highway of evil more beloved to you than the highway of good."
19323 - Aḥmad b. ʿIṣām al-Anṣārī narrated to us, Aḥmad b. al-Zubayrī narrated to us, ʿĪsā b. ʿIqāl narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās regarding His saying: "And We guided him to the two highways," he said: The two breasts.
His saying, the Almighty: "But he has not attempted the steep pass [al-ʿAqabah]"
19324 - On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, may Allāh be pleased with him, regarding "But he has not attempted the steep pass," he said: A mountain in Hell.
19325 - On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, he said: The steep pass is the Fire.
ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd and Ibn al-Mundhir recorded on the authority of Qatādah, may Allāh be pleased with him, that he said: For people, there is a steep pass before Paradise, and attempting it is the freeing of a slave, as the verse states.
