His saying, the Almighty: "The midst of Hell."
18194 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "The midst of Hell," he said: The middle of Hell.
18195 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: It was mentioned to us that Ka'b al-Ahbar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In Paradise there are apertures. If anyone among its people wishes to look at his enemy in the Fire, he looks down, and thus increases in gratitude.
His saying, the Almighty: "By Allah, you nearly ruined me!"
18196 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Are you looking down?" He said: He asked his Lord to let him look down, so he looked down and saw him in the midst of Hell. He says: In its center. He saw their skulls boiling, so he said: "So-and-so...!" Were it not that Allah identified him to him, he would not have known him. His appearance and state had changed. At that, he said: "By Allah, you nearly ruined me!" meaning: You would have destroyed me if I had obeyed you. "And were it not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been among those brought forth"—he said: in the Fire—"Then, are we not to die..." up to His saying: "the great success." He said: This is the speech of the people of Paradise. Allah says: "For the like of this let the workers work."
18197 - From al-Hasan regarding the verse, he said: They knew that every bliss after death is something that will be cut off, so they said: "Then, are we not to die, except for our first death, and we will not be punished?" It was said: No. They said: "Indeed, this is the great success."
18198 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: When Allah mentioned the Zaqqum tree, the wrongdoers were tempted by it. Abu Jahl said: "Your companion claims that there is a tree in the Fire, yet the Fire consumes trees. By Allah, we only know Zaqqum as dates and butter." So they were astonished. Then Allah revealed, when they were amazed that there could be trees in the Fire: "Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire," meaning it is nourished by the Fire, and from it, it was created. "Its emerging fruit is as if it were heads of the devils." He said: He likens it to that.
His saying, the Almighty: "Its emerging fruit is as if it were heads of the devils."
18199 - From Wahb ibn Munabbih (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Its emerging fruit is as if it were heads of the devils," he said: The hairs of the devils, standing upright toward the sky.

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ
١٨١٩٤ - عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فِي قَوْلِهِ: سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ قَالَ: وَسَطِ الْجَحِيمِ «١» .
١٨١٩٥ - عَنْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ، عَنْهُ قَالَ: ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّ كَعْبَ الْأَحْبَارِ رضي، عَنْهُ قَالَ: فِي الْجَنَّةِ كُوًى. فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى عَدُوِّهِ فِي النَّارِ اطَّلَعَ فَازْدَادَ شُكْرًا.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كِدْتَ لَتُرْدِينِ
١٨١٩٦ - عَنْ قَتَادَة رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي قَوْلِهِ: هَلْ أَنتُمُ مُطَّلِعُونَ قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَبَّهُ أَنْ يُطْلِعَهُ فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ يَقُولُ: فِي وَسَطِهَا فَرَأَى جَمَاجِمَهُمْ تَغْلِي فَقَالَ: فُلانٌ ... ! فَلَوْلا أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَرَّفَهُ إِيَّاهُ لَمَا عَرَفَهُ. لَقَدْ تَغَيَّرَ خَبَرُهُ وَسَبْرُهُ، فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ: تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كِدْتَ لَتُرْدِينِ يَقُولُ: لَتُهْلِكُنِي لَوْ أَطَعْتُكَ وَلَوْلا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ قَالَ: فِي النَّارِ أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ قَالَ: هَذَا قَوْلُ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ: لِمِثْلِ هَذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ «٢» .
١٨١٩٧ - عَنِ الْحَسَنِ فِي الْآيَةِ قَالَ: عَلِمُوا أَنَّ كُلَّ نَعِيمٍ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتُ يَقْطَعُهُ فَقَالُوا أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ إِلا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَى وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ قِيلَ: لَا. قَالُوا: إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ «٣» .
١٨١٩٨ - عَنْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ، عَنْهُ قَالَ: لَمَّا ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ شَجَرَةَ الزُّقُومِ افْتَتَنَ بِهَا الظَّلَمَةُ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ: يَزْعُمُ صَاحِبُكُمْ فِي هَذَا أَنَّ فِي النَّارِ شَجَرَةً، وَالنَّارُ تَأْكَلُ الشَّجَرَ، وَإِنَّا وَاللَّهِ مَا نَعْلَمُ الزَّقُّومَ إِلا التَّمْرَ، وَالزَّبَدَ، فَتُرقَمُوا فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ حِينَ عَجِبُوا أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي النَّارِ شَجَرٌ إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أصل الجحيم، أي غذيت بالنار، ومنها خلقت، طلعها كأنه رؤس الشَّيَاطِينِ قَالَ: يُشَبِّهُهَا بِذَلِكَ «٤» .
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُ رؤس الشَّيَاطِينِ
١٨١٩٩ - عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ، عَنْهُ في قوله: طلعها كأنه رؤس الشَّيَاطِينِ قَالَ: شُعُورُ الشَّيَاطِينِ، قَائِمَةٌ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ «٥» .
