The expiation (kaffarah) follows the order mentioned in the hadith, according to the opinion of the majority of scholars.
Therefore, emancipation (of a slave) is obligatory first. If one is unable, then fasting two consecutive months. If one is unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor persons from the average of what one feeds one's own family. It is not valid to move from one state to another unless one is unable to fulfill the previous one. The Malikis, and one narration from Ahmad, hold that one is given a choice between these three; whichever one performs, it suffices for him.
