bearing burdens and work, according to Ibn Mas'ud and others. Then it was said: the term is specific to camels. And it was said: it applies to everything a person carries loads upon, whether it be a donkey, mule, or camel, according to Abu Zayd, regardless of whether loads were upon it or not.

1402: 7986: Eight: 1: His, the Almighty's, saying: "Eight pairs," meaning: eight individuals. Every individual, according to the Arabs, requires another and is called a zawj (pair/mate); it is said of the male that he is a zawj, and of the female: a zawj. The term zawj applies to both the singular and the dual; it is said: "They are two zawjayn (pairs)" and "They are a zawj," just as it is said: "They are two alike (siyan)" and "They are alike (sawa')." You say: "I bought two pairs (zawjay) of pigeons," intending a male and a female.
