From the surface. So they fled to the wilderness, and a cloud shaded them, which is the "Zullah" (shadow/canopy). They found coolness and a breeze in it, then it rained fire upon them and they burned.

Yazid al-Jariri said: Allah unleashed the heat upon them for seven days and their nights, then a mountain appeared to them from afar. A man went to it and found beneath it rivers, springs, trees, and cool water. They all gathered beneath it, and the mountain fell upon them, which is the "Zullah" (canopy).
