the root of 'subat' is from stretching. It is said: a woman 'sabatat' her hair, meaning: she unbraided it and let it loose, and a man is 'masbut', meaning: stretched of stature. It is said: sleep is called 'subat' because it occurs with stretching, and in stretching there is a sense of rest. It is also said: 'al-sabt' is cutting off; thus, sleep is a cessation from occupation, and from this is the 'Sabt' (Sabbath) of the Jews, because of their cessation from work during it.
2705: 15240: Purifying: 1: On the authority of Abu Sa'id, he said: It was said, O Messenger of Allah, shall we perform ablution from the well of Bida'ah—a well into which carrion, menstrual cloths, and the flesh of dogs are thrown?—He replied: "Indeed, water is purifying; nothing makes it impure."
It is authentic (hasan). Narrated by Abu Dawud (h/67), al-Tirmidhi (h/66), Ahmad (3/86), al-Manthur (5/73), Talkhis (1/13), Ma'ani (1/11), Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/142), al-Mishkat (478), and al-Daraqutni (1/30, 31). It was also narrated by Ahmad (4/213, 215), al-Bayhaqi (1/257), al-Jawami' (5821), Ithaf (2/332), and Sharh al-Sunnah (2/61).

السبات من التمدد يقال: سبتت المرأة شعراها أي: نقضته وأرسلته، ورجل مسبوت أي: ممدود الخلقة، وقيل: للنوم سبات لأنه بالتمدد يكون، وفي التمدد معنى الراحة، وقيل: السبت القطع، فالنوع انقطاع عن الاشتغال، ومنه سبت اليهود:
لانقطاعهم عن الأعمال فيه.
