2818 - Muhammad b. al-Fadl b. Musa informed us, Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Hasan b. Shaqiq reported to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him," [it means] for your sins upon giving charity.
His saying, Exalted is He: "and bounty, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
2819 - Ahmad b. Mansur al-Marwazi narrated to us, 'Ali b. al-Hasan reported to us, al-Husayn b. Waqid informed us, Yazid al-Nahwi reported to us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding "while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty," he said: [Bounty] in sustenance.
2820 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah b. Sulayman reported to us, Ibn al-Mubarak informed us, Sa'id or someone else reported to us, from Qatadah, regarding "while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty," he said: Bounty for your poverty.
2821 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl, Muhammad b. 'Ali reported to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty," he means: that He will compensate you for your expenditures.
His saying, Exalted is He: "He gives wisdom to whom He wills"
[The first interpretation]
2822 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth reported to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, meaning in His saying: "He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good," he said: Knowledge of the Qur'an, its abrogating and abrogated [verses], its categorical and allegorical [verses], its advanced and deferred [verses], its lawful and forbidden, and its parables.
The second interpretation:
2823 - My father narrated to us, Yahya b. al-Mughirah informed us, Jarir informed us, from Layth, from Mujahid, regarding "He gives wisdom to whom He wills," he said: It is not prophethood, but rather it is knowledge, jurisprudence (fiqh), and the Qur'an.
The third interpretation:
2824 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl reported to us, 'Uthman b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, from al-Rabi' b. Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah, regarding His saying: "He gives wisdom to whom He wills," he said: Wisdom is fear [of Allah], for the fear of Allah is the head of all wisdom.
