[The fifth interpretation]

2837 - Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu Tahir reported to us, Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Malik said: Knowledge is wisdom; it is a light by which Allah guides whomever He wills, and it is not by the abundance of questions.

[The sixth interpretation]

2838 - Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Harun b. Sa'id al-Ayli reported to us, Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman b. Zayd saying: Among them are those who are given their wisdom in their tongue, but are not given their wisdom in their heart; and among them are those who are given their wisdom in their heart, but are not given it in their tongue. There is nothing in the heart of that which he acts upon, for his actions do not confirm what his tongue utters. As for the one who is given wisdom in his heart but is not given it in his tongue, he acts upon what Allah has placed in his heart of wisdom, yet since he is not given it in his tongue, it is not conveyed from him; thus, he benefits himself but does not benefit others. The third [type] acts upon what Allah has placed in his heart of wisdom with the action of the wise, and he speaks with what Allah has placed in his tongue of wisdom with the speech of the wise; he benefits himself and others by it. That which the tongue utters is evidence of what is in the heart, and that which he acted upon—which was in the heart—of wisdom, is a confirmation of what he spoke.

[The seventh interpretation]

2839 - Sa'id b. Sa'd al-Bukhari narrated to us, 'Amr b. 'Awn reported to us, Hushaym informed us, from Kawthar b. Hakim, from Makhul, he said: Indeed, the Quran is one part out of seventy-two parts of prophethood, and it is the wisdom which Allah mentioned: "and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good."

[The eighth interpretation]

2840 - My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah b. Hamzah b. Isma'il informed me, he said: I heard, Abu Sinan reported to us regarding His saying: "and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good," he said: It is prophethood(1).

His saying, the Almighty: "And none will remember except those of understanding." Its interpretation has already preceded. Verse 179

الحواشي

(1). Ibn Kathir said: The correct view is that wisdom—as the majority have stated—is not exclusively restricted to prophethood; rather, it is more general than that. Its highest form is prophethood and messengership, but the followers of the prophets have a portion of this good in a subordinate manner. 1/476.
