[The third interpretation]
2849 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', regarding His saying: "But if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you." He said: All is accepted, if the intention is sincere, and charity in secret is better. It used to be said: Verily, charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire. It was narrated from Qatadah something similar to that.
[The fourth interpretation]
2850 - Muhammad b. Hammad al-Tahrani informed us in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq reported to us, a man reported to me from 'Ammar al-Duhni, from Abu Ja'far regarding His saying: "But if you conceal them and give them to the poor"—he means: voluntary charity.
His saying, the Exalted: "And He will remove from you some of your misdeeds. And Allah, of what you do, is [fully] Acquainted."
2851 - My father narrated to us, Ibn al-Taba' narrated to us, 'Abbad b. al-'Awwam narrated to us, Hanzalah narrated to us, Shahr narrated to us, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "And He will remove from you some of your misdeeds." He said: Charity is what removes [sins].
His saying, the Exalted: "Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills."
[The first interpretation]
2852 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj and Abu Sa'id b. Yahya b. Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, they both said: Abu Dawud al-Hafari narrated to us, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, from Ja'far b. Iyas, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: They would not give anything to their relatives [if they were] polytheists, so it was revealed: "Not upon you is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills."
2853 - Ahmad b. al-Qasim b. 'Atiyyah narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, al-Ash'ath b. Ishaq narrated to us, from Ja'far b. Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he used to order that charity be given only to the people of Islam, until this verse was revealed: "Not upon you..."
