His saying, the Exalted: "fighting therein."

2024 - Muhammad b. al-'Abbas, the mawla (freed slave) of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, [who] said: Muhammad b. Ishaq [narrated] in what Yazid b. Ruman and al-Zuhri narrated to me, from 'Urwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: Allah revealed to His Messenger: "They ask you about the Sacred Month - fighting therein," meaning: about fighting therein. Similar to this was narrated from 'Ikrimah and al-Rabi' b. Anas.

2025 - Abu Bakr b. Ishaq al-Saghani narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. 'Amr narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq al-Fazari, who said: I asked Sufyan al-Thawri about the saying of Allah: "They ask you about the Sacred Month - fighting therein. Say, 'Fighting therein is a great [transgression].'" He said: "This is something abrogated, it has passed, and there is no harm in fighting during the Sacred Month or at other times."

His saying: "Fighting therein is a great [transgression]."

2026 - Abu Bakr b. Ishaq al-Saghani narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. 'Amr narrated to us - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: "They ask you about the Sacred Month - fighting therein. Say, 'Fighting therein is a great [transgression],'" and other things are greater than it.

2027 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad b. Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding: "Say, 'Fighting therein is a great [transgression],'" he said: It is not lawful, and what you have done, O assembly of polytheists, is greater than fighting in the Sacred Month.

His saying: "And aversion from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him."

2028 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the polytheists hindered the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and turned him away from the Sacred Mosque in a Sacred Month. Then Allah granted victory to His Prophet in a Sacred Month of the following year. The polytheists criticized the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) for fighting in a Sacred Month, so Allah said: "Say, 'Fighting therein is a great [transgression], and aversion from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [aversion from] the Sacred Mosque and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater than the fighting therein.'"
