al-Suddi, "for what I have given you of the Book and wisdom," he said: What I have given you. Then the Jews say: You have taken the covenant of the people for Muhammad, and he is the one who was mentioned in the Book among you.
The Second Aspect:
3760 - al-'Abbas b. al-Walid b. Mazid informed us, Muhammad b. Shu'ayb b. Shabur informed us, 'Uthman b. 'Ata' informed me, from his father, regarding His saying: "Then a messenger came to you confirming what is with you." He said: The covenant of the People of the Book was taken, that if a messenger came to them confirming the scriptures which were with them, which the prophets brought, they would certainly believe in him and support him. So they affirmed that, and they bore witness for Allah against themselves. Then when Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to them, he confirmed the scriptures of the prophets that were before him. Whoever turns away after that, then they are the disobedient (al-fasiqun).
His saying, the Exalted: "Then a messenger came to you confirming what is with you, that you might believe in him and support him"
[The First Aspect]

Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Then a messenger came to you confirming what is with you, that you might believe in him and support him." He said: No prophet was ever sent from the time of Nuh (Noah) but that Allah took his covenant that he would certainly believe in Muhammad and support him if he came out while he was alive, and He took it upon his people that they would believe in him and support him if he came out while they were alive.
The Second Aspect:

Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, regarding: "Then a messenger came to you confirming what is with you, that you might believe in him and support him." He said: So this verse is for the People of the Book; Allah took their covenant that they would believe in Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and confirm him.
His saying, the Exalted: "He said, 'Have you affirmed?'"
3763 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' who said: "Have you affirmed?" He said: They are the People of the Book.
3764 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad b. Ishaq said: Muhammad b. Abi Muhammad said: Then he mentioned what He took from them and from their prophets as a covenant to confirm him when he came to them, and their affirmation upon themselves, so He said: "And when Allah took the covenant of the prophets."
