"for what I have given you of the Book and wisdom, then a messenger came to you confirming what is with you, that you might believe in him and support him." He said, "Have you affirmed and taken upon that as My covenant?"

3765 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "and taken upon that as My covenant" (isri), meaning: My covenant ('ahdi).

3766 - Muhammad b. al-'Abbas, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad b. Ishaq narrated to me regarding His saying: "Have you affirmed and taken upon that as My covenant (isri)," meaning: The burden of what you have been charged with regarding My covenant.

Abu Muhammad said: It is also narrated from Mujahid, al-Rabi' b. Anas, al-Suddi, and Qatadah that they said: [It means] My covenant.

His saying, the Exalted: "They said, 'We have affirmed.' He said, 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.'"

3767 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' regarding His saying: "They said, 'We have affirmed.' He said, 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.'" He said: They are the People of the Book.

His saying, the Exalted: "Whoever turns away after that, then they are the disobedient (al-fasiqun)."

3768 - Musa b. Harun al-Tusi informed me in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Marrudhi narrated to us, Shayban narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Whoever turns away after that," he says: this covenant which was taken from them, "then they are the disobedient."

His saying, the Exalted: "Do they seek other than the religion of Allah, while to Him has submitted whoever is in the heavens and the earth?"

3769 - My father narrated to us, Hisham b. Khalid narrated to us, Mubashshir b. Isma'il al-Halabi narrated to us, from al-'Ala' b. Hilal, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "while to Him has submitted whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly." He said: The people of the heavens, the Muhajirun (Emigrants), the Ansar (Helpers), and the people of Bahrain.
