The seventh interpretation:

2161 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musaddad narrated to us, Khalid narrated to us, 'Ata' narrated to us, from Tawus, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "The unintentional oath (laghw al-yamin) is that you swear while you are angry."

His saying: "But He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned"

2162 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musaddad narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, regarding His saying: "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths," he said: I said: "Is it a man saying: 'No, by Allah,' and 'Yes, by Allah'?" He said: "No, rather it is your forbidding what Allah has made lawful for you; that is what Allah will not take you to task for abandoning, and provide expiation for your oath."

His saying: "for what your hearts have earned"

[The first interpretation]

2163 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa'id b. Bashir reported to us, Abu Bishr informed me, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "But He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned," [meaning] what your hearts intended in terms of sins; so for this, you are required to provide expiation. Abu Muhammad said: It was reported from Mujahid, 'Ata', al-Suddi, Sa'id b. Jubayr, Qatadah, al-Rabi' b. Anas, Muqatil b. Hayyan, and al-Hasan, the like of this.

The second interpretation:

2164 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "But He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned," [meaning] of doubt and hypocrisy.

The third interpretation:

2165 - My father narrated to us, Yahya b. al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir reported to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, regarding this verse, meaning His saying: "But He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned," [meaning] when he swears the oath while he knows that he is a liar, then that is what he is taken to task for.
