His saying, the Exalted: "Until he brings us an offering which the fire consumes."
4598 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d al-‘Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Until he brings us an offering which the fire consumes": A man would give charity, and if it was accepted from him, a fire would descend from the sky and consume it. It has been reported from al-Hasan something similar.
4599 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Musa ibn Harun narrated to us, Marwan narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak: "Until he brings us an offering which the fire consumes" (he said: They are the Jews).
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Messengers have already come to you before me with clear proofs.'"
4600 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid informed us, from Abu Yazid al-Muradi—who is al-Nu‘man ibn Qays—from al-‘Ala’ ibn Badr who said: Messengers used to come with clear proofs, and the mark of the prophethood of [some] messengers was that one of them would place the meat of a cow upon his hand, and a fire would come from the sky and consume it. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down: "Messengers have already come to you before me with clear proofs and with that which you spoke of."
4601 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Musa ibn Harun narrated to us, Marwan narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, who said: They said, "O Muhammad, if you bring us an offering which the fire consumes, we will believe you; otherwise, you are not a prophet." So Allah, the Exalted, said: "Messengers have already come to you before me with clear proofs and with that which you spoke of," meaning: They came to you with clear proofs and with the offering which the fire consumes.
His saying, the Exalted: "Why, then, did you kill them, if you were truthful?"
4602 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abi Za’idah narrated to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha‘bi, regarding His saying: "Why, then, did you kill them, if you were truthful?" He said: Because they were pleased with their action.
4603 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir informed us, from Abu Yazid al-Muradi, from al-‘Ala’ ibn Badr, I said: "What is your view on His saying: 'Why, then, did you kill them,' when they themselves did not reach that [time]?" He said: "By their taking as allies those who killed the prophets."
