[The Fifth Aspect]
4645 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to us, my father informed us, from Shu'bah, from al-Mughirah, from Ibrahim, regarding His saying: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought," he said: People from the Jews who equipped an army for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
It is also reported from Qatadah that he said: They are the Jews.
His saying, the Exalted: "And they love to be praised for what they have not done"
[The First Aspect]
4646 - My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi Maryam narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ja'far, meaning: Ibn Abi Kathir, narrated to me, Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to me, from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that some men among the hypocrites in the era of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, whenever the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out for a military expedition, they would remain behind, rejoicing in their staying back in defiance of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Then, when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, arrived, they would apologize to him, swear oaths, and they would love to be praised for what they had not done. So this verse was revealed: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they have not done."
[The Second Aspect]
4647 - Ahmad ibn Yunus ibn al-Musayyab and Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, they both said: Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Ibn Jurayj said: Ibn Abi Mulaykah informed me that Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf informed him that Marwan said: "Go, O Rafi' (to his doorkeeper), to Ibn 'Abbas and say: 'If every man among us who rejoices in what he has been given and loves to be praised for what he has not done is to be punished, then we shall all be punished.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "What is the matter with you and this [verse]? Has this verse not been revealed concerning the People of the Scripture?" Then Ibn 'Abbas recited: "And when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture: 'You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it'" (Qur'an 3:187), and Ibn 'Abbas recited: "Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they have not done." Then Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked them about something, so they concealed it and told him something else. They went out, and they made it appear to him that they had told him what he had asked them about, and they sought to be praised for that by him, and they rejoiced in what they had brought of their concealment of what he had asked them about."
