His saying, the Exalted: "Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to disbelieve."

[The First Aspect]

3956 - Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn Zanjalah and Kathir ibn Shihab al-Qazwini narrated to us, both saying: Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Sabiq narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b regarding His saying: "Then as for those whose faces became black: 'Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to disbelieve,'" he said: They become two groups on the Day of Resurrection. It is said to those whose faces have become black: "Did you disbelieve after your belief?" He said: It is the faith which was in the time of Adam, when they were one nation, Muslims.

3957 - 'Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding "Did you disbelieve after your belief?" he said: Their faith for which the covenant was taken from them in the loins of Adam, peace be upon him.

And the Second Aspect:

3958 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi regarding "Then as for those whose faces became black: 'Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to disbelieve,'" he said: This refers to those who disbelieved from among the people of the Qiblah when they fought one another.

His saying, the Exalted: "And as for those whose faces became white, they will be in the mercy of Allah."

3959 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b regarding His saying: "And as for those whose faces became white," he said: Those who remained steadfast upon that faith of theirs and were sincere in their religion for Him, so He whitened their faces and entered them into His good pleasure and His Paradise.

3960 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray', narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And as for those whose faces became white, they will be in the mercy of Allah; they will abide therein eternally," he said: These are the people of the obedience of Allah and those who fulfilled the covenant of Allah. Allah, the Exalted, says: "They will abide therein eternally."
