His saying, the Exalted: "But if an evil befalls them, they say, 'This is from you.'"
5647 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman—meaning al-Dashtaki—narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "But if an evil befalls them, they say, 'This is from you,'" he said: This is regarding adversity.
5648 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, Sahl—meaning ibn Bakkar—narrated to us, al-Aswad ibn Shayban narrated to us, 'Uqbah ibn Wasil, the son of the brother of Mutarrif, narrated to me, from Mutarrif that 'Abd Allah said: "What do you want from the Qadar (divine decree)? Does the verse that is in Surat al-Nisa' not suffice you: 'But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allah," and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you"?'"—meaning from yourself. By Allah, they were not tasked with the Qadar while they had been commanded (with duties), and to Him they shall return.
5649 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Haytham—meaning Ibn al-Yaman—narrated to us, a man whom he named narrated to us, al-Suddi narrated to me, he said: "And if an evil befalls them"—and the evil is drought and harm to their wealth. They regarded Muhammad, peace be upon him, as an ill omen, and they said: "This is from you." They say: "It is because we left our religion and followed Muhammad that this affliction befell us." So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "Say, 'All is from Allah.'"
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'All is from Allah.'"
5650 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Say, 'All is from Allah,'" he says: Good and evil are from Allah. It was narrated from al-Suddi similarly.
His saying, the Exalted: "So what is the matter with these people that they do not seem to understand a word?"
5651 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Haytham ibn Yaman narrated to us, a man whom he named narrated to us, al-Suddi narrated to me regarding His saying: "So what is the matter with these people that they do not seem to understand a word?" He said: He says: The Qur'an.
His saying, the Exalted: "Whatever of good reaches you."

5652 - My father narrated to us, Abu Taqi Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik narrated to us, Baqiyyah reported to us, from Mubashshir, from al-Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah, from 'Atiyyah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Whatever of good reaches you, it is from Allah," he said: This is on the day of Uhud.
(1). Ibn Kathir said: This is a firm, strong statement in refutation of both the Qadariyyah and the Jabriyyah sects together. 2/319. (2). Meaning they regarded him as an ill omen.
