His saying, the Exalted: "So seize them and kill them wherever you find them and do not take from among them an ally or a helper."
[5755] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu Bakr and 'Uthman, sons of Abi Shaybah, narrated to us, both saying: Jarir narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And kill them wherever you find them," he said: "It abrogated what was before it of showing favor [to them] or [taking] ransom." The wording is 'Uthman's.
His saying, the Exalted: "Except for those who get to a people between whom and you is a treaty."
5756 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman ibn 'Ata', from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Except for those who get to a people between whom and you is a treaty," [he said]: "It was abrogated by [Surah] Bara'ah: 'And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them.'(1)"
It was narrated from al-Zuhri, 'Ikrimah, al-Hasan, and Qatadah similarly.
5757 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Mukhtar narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "Except for those who get to a people between whom and you is a treaty"—it was revealed concerning Hilal ibn 'Uwaymir al-Aslami and Suraqah ibn Malik al-Mudliji, and concerning the Banu Jadhimah ibn 'Amir ibn 'Abd Manaf.
His saying, the Exalted: "Or they come to you."
[5758] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Or they come to you"—he says: "They return and enter among you."
His saying, the Exalted: "Their chests have become tight."
[5759] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Yazid ibn Makhlad al-Wasiti Abu Khidash narrated to us, Bishr ibn Mubashshir informed us, Hushaym narrated to us, from Husayn, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Their chests have become tight," he said: "From these and from those."
