His saying, the Exalted: "You will find others."
5767 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: "Then he mentioned Nu'aym ibn Mas'ud al-Ashja'i, who used to feel secure among both the polytheists and the Muslims by carrying talk between the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the polytheists, so he said: 'You will find others who desire to be secure from you and secure from their own people.'"
5768 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "You will find others who desire [to be secure]..." [he said]: "They were a clan in Tihamah who said: 'O Prophet of Allah, we will not fight you nor will we fight our own people.' Thus they desired to be secure from the Messenger of Allah and secure from their own people, so Allah refused that for them."
His saying, the Exalted: "Desiring to be secure from you."
[5769] Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Desiring to be secure from you and secure from their own people," [he said]: "[They are] people from the people of Makkah who come to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and embrace Islam out of hypocrisy, then return to Quraysh and relapse into [worship of] idols, seeking by that to be secure here and there, so he was commanded to fight them if they did not remove themselves and make peace."
His saying, the Exalted: "Whenever they are returned to the trial."
[5770] Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Whenever they are returned to the trial, they are relapsed into it," he says: "Whenever they desire to come out of the trial, they are relapsed into it."
5771 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Whenever they are returned to the trial, they are relapsed into it," [he said]: "Whenever a tribulation (bala') is presented to them, they perish in it."
His saying, the Exalted: "The trial."
[5772] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Whenever they are returned to the trial," he says: "To shirk (polytheism)."
