His saying, Exalted is He: "They will say, 'In what condition were you?'" until the end of the verse.
5867 - My father narrated to us, Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "They will say, 'In what condition were you?'" They said: "We were oppressed in the land." They said: "We were oppressed in Mecca." It was said to them: The companions of Muhammad are in the same status as those who were killed at Badr, the weak ones among the disbelievers of Quraysh.
His saying, Exalted is He: "They will say, 'Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?'"
5868 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by reading, Ibn Wahb informed us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to me, from al-Thawri, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, that Sa'id ibn Jubayr said regarding the saying of Allah, Exalted is He: "They will say, 'Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?'" They said: If acts of disobedience are committed in a place, then depart from it.
5869 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: When al-'Abbas, 'Aqil, and Nawfal were taken prisoner, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to al-'Abbas: "Ransom yourself and your two nephews." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, did we not pray toward your qiblah and testify to your testimony?" He said: "O 'Abbas, you disputed and were defeated in your argument." Then he recited this verse to him: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein? For those, their refuge is Hell—and evil it is as a destination."
His saying, Exalted is He: "Their refuge is Hell—and evil it is as a destination."
5870 - And by the same chain from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "For those, their refuge is Hell—and evil it is as a destination," he said: On the day this verse was revealed, anyone who accepted Islam but did not emigrate was considered a disbeliever until he emigrated.
His saying, Exalted is He: "Except for the oppressed among the men, the women, and the children."
5871 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ibn 'Uyaynah informed us, from 'Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid, who said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas say: I and my mother were among the oppressed among the women and the children.
