And the second interpretation:

4257 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Junayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Now you have seen it while you are looking [on]" at them, then you turned away from it.

His saying, the Exalted: "Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him."

4258 - Abu 'Ubayd Allah Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, the nephew of Ibn Wahb, narrated to us, my paternal uncle narrated to us, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, Ibn 'Abbas informed me: That Abu Bakr came out while 'Umar was speaking to the people. He said: "Sit down, O 'Umar." But 'Umar refused to sit. He said: "Sit down, O 'Umar." But 'Umar refused to sit. Then Abu Bakr recited the tashahhud, so the people turned to him and left 'Umar. Abu Bakr said: "To proceed: Whoever among you was worshipping Muhammad, then Muhammad has died. And whoever among you was worshipping Allah, then Allah is Ever-Living and does not die." Allah the Exalted says: "Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him." He said: By Allah, it was as if the people did not know that Allah had revealed this verse until Abu Bakr recited it. Then all the people received it from him, so I do not hear any person except that he recites it.

4259 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi, who said: Then those who said "Muhammad has been killed, so return to your people" said: "Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him."

His saying, the Exalted: "So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?"

4260 - al-Fadl ibn Shadhan narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Ja'far al-Mukharrimi narrated to us, from Abu 'Awn, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf regarding: "So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?" He said: It refers to the cry of Satan on the day of Uhud: "Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been killed."

4261 - Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: 'Ali used to say during the life of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Allah says: "So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?" By Allah, we shall not turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us. By Allah, if he dies or is killed, I shall fight for that which he fought for until I die. By Allah, I am his brother, his paternal cousin, and his patron (wali), so who is more entitled to him than I?
