the verse: "a punishment from above you or from beneath your feet." As for the punishment from beneath your feet, it is the wicked servants.

[The Second Aspect]

7408 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "or from beneath your feet," meaning: from your lower classes.

It was also narrated from Abu Sinan al-Shaybani that he said: Your slaves and your lower classes.

[The Third Aspect]

7409 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik regarding "or from beneath your feet," he said: The swallowing [of the earth/al-khasf]. It was also narrated from Mujahid something similar.

His saying: "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects."

7410 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri' al-Makki narrated to us in the year 255 AH, Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: It was revealed to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects and makes some of you taste the violence of others," and he said: "These two are lighter," or "These two are easier."

7411 - Muhammad ibn 'Awf al-Homsi narrated to us, Abu al-Aswad—meaning al-Nadr ibn 'Abd al-Jabbar—narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, from Khalid ibn Yazid, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: When this verse was revealed: "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects," the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "This is easier, and had he sought refuge from Him, He would have protected him." It was also narrated from Muqatil ibn Hayyan and Mujahid the same.

7412 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects," meaning: the sects are the differing desires. It was also narrated from Mujahid and Muqatil ibn Hayyan the same.

7413 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid (1) regarding His saying: "or that He makes you taste the confusion of sects," [it means] what occurs within it of tribulation and disagreement.
