those they named for Allah—meaning a portion of the crops—and for their partners and their idols a portion. Whatever the wind carried from what they had named for Allah to the portion of their idols, they would abandon it and say, "Allah is free of this." And whatever the wind carried from the portion of their idols to the portion of Allah, they would take it. The livestock they named for Allah were the bahirah and the sa'ibah.
His saying: "Evil is what they judge."
7915 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: His saying: "Then what was for their partners did not reach Allah, but what was for Allah did reach their partners; evil is what they judge." They used to divide a portion of their wealth, and they would assign it to Allah, and they would plant a crop and assign it to Allah the Exalted, and they would assign for their gods the like of that. Whatever came out for the gods, they would spend it on them, and whatever came out for Allah, they would give it as charity. If that which they made for their partners perished and that which was for Allah increased, they would say, "Our gods cannot do without expenditure," so they would take that which was for Allah and spend it on their gods. And if that which was for Allah withered and that which was for their gods increased, they would say, "If Allah had willed, He would have made that which is His flourish." And they would not return to Him anything from that which was for the gods. Allah the Blessed and Exalted said: "If they were truthful in what they divided, then evil indeed is what they judged: to take from Me and not give Me." That is when He says: "Evil is what they judge."
7916 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh narrated to us, he said: I heard Ibn Zayd—meaning 'Abd al-Rahman—saying regarding His saying: "And they assigned to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share, and they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners.' Then what was for their partners did not reach Allah, but what was for Allah did reach their partners." He said: Everything they assigned to Allah from an animal they slaughtered for Him, they would never eat it until they mentioned the name of the gods along with it, while for what was for the gods, they did not mention the name of Allah along with it. Then he recited the saying of Allah the Blessed and Exalted: "Then what was for their partners did not reach Allah, but what was for Allah did reach their partners; evil is what they judge."
His saying: "And likewise, their partners have made the killing of their children attractive to many of the polytheists."
7917 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying: "And likewise, their partners have made the killing of their children attractive to many of the polytheists." He says: They made the killing of their children attractive to them.
