His saying, the Almighty: "Lest you not be just."

[6095] Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Lest you not be just," he said, meaning: From the truth.

His saying, the Almighty: "And if you distort."

[The first interpretation]

[6096] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And if you distort [your tongues] with the testimony."

[6097] Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi reported to me in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And if you distort," he says: You twist with your tongue away from the truth, and it is obstinacy, so he does not establish the testimony as it should be.

It was narrated from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, 'Atiyyah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Dahhak, al-Suddi, and Muqatil ibn Hayyan similarly.

[The second interpretation]

[6098] My father narrated to me, 'Amr ibn Rafi' narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Qabus ibn Abi Zabyan, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And if you distort or turn away, then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted," he said: Two men sit before the judge, and the judge's distortion and turning away is in favor of one of the two men against the other.

[The third interpretation]

[6099] Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding: "And if you distort," he said: You pervert [the truth].

His saying, the Almighty: "Or turn away."

[6100] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Or turn away," he means: the testimony.
