His saying, the Almighty: "And [it has already been revealed to you in the Book] that when you hear the verses of Allah being disbelieved in and mocked."
[6124] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "That when you hear the verses of Allah being disbelieved in and mocked," and what is similar to this in the Quran, he said: "Allah commanded the believers to remain united and forbade them from disagreement and division, and informed them that those who came before them only perished through argumentation and disputation in religion."
[6125] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "That when you hear the verses of Allah being disbelieved in and mocked," he said: "This abrogated the verse which is in [Surat] al-An'am, and this is what was revealed in Medina. He warned them, saying: 'If you sit and are content with their engaging in idle talk and mocking the Quran, then you are indeed like them.'"
His saying, the Almighty: "So do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation."
[6126] My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Salam al-Tarasusi narrated to us, Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, al-'Awwam ibn Hawshab reported from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from Abu Wa'il, who said: "A man may speak a word of falsehood to make people laugh, yet Allah becomes angry with him." I mentioned this to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, and he said: "He spoke the truth. Does Allah the Almighty not say: 'When you hear the verses of Allah being disbelieved in and mocked, then do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation'?"
His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, you would then be like them."
[6127] Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us, from al-'Ala' ibn al-Minhal, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, that 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz caught some people drinking and flogged them, and among them was a righteous man. It was said: "He is fasting." He recited: "So do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation; indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell all together."
[6128] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and he said: "If you sit and are content with their engaging in idle talk and mocking the Quran, then you are indeed like them."
