تفسير ابن أبي حاتم
مجلد 4 · صفحة 44قوله تعالى: يراؤن الناس.

الترجمة · EN

It is disliked for a man to say: 'I am lazy,' and interpret [this state by] this verse: 'And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'They show off to the people.'

[6140] My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray' informed us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: 'They show off to the people.' He said: 'By Allah, were it not for the people, the hypocrite would not pray. He does not pray except out of showing off and for reputation.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'And they do not remember Allah except a little.'

[6141] Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Abu al-Ashhab, from al-Hasan regarding: 'And they do not remember Allah except a little.' He said: 'It was [considered] little only because it was for other than Allah.'

[6142] My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-Salam ibn Mutahhir and 'Abd al-Kabir ibn al-Mu'afa ibn 'Imran al-Mawsili narrated to us, [both] saying: Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from 'Awf, from al-Hasan, who said: He recited this [verse]: 'They show off to the people, and they do not remember Allah except a little.' Al-Hasan said: 'By Allah, if that little [amount] of theirs had been for Allah, He would have accepted it, but that little of theirs was [done out of] showing off.'

[6143] My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us and Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: 'And they do not remember Allah except a little.' [He said:] 'It is only termed the remembering of the hypocrite [as little] because Allah did not accept it. Everything that Allah rejects is little, [and] everything that Allah accepts is much.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'Wavering between that.'

[6144] My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Isra'il informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Ahwas, from 'Abdullah, who said: 'The parable of the believer, the hypocrite, and the disbeliever is like that of three people who reached a valley. One of them entered and crossed it. Then the other entered until he reached the middle of the valley, [where] the one who was on the edge of the valley called to him: 'Woe to you! Where are you going? To destruction! Return the way you came.' And the one who had crossed called to him: 'Come here, [to] salvation!' He began to look at this one sometimes and at this one sometimes.' He said: 'Then a torrent came and drowned him. The one who crossed is the believer, the one who drowned is the hypocrite, [who was] wavering between that—not belonging to these nor to these—and the one who remained is the disbeliever.'
