His saying, the Almighty: "If you are suffering."

[5922] My father narrated to us, [saying] Abu Salih narrated to us, [saying] Mu'awiya ibn Salih narrated me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talha, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "If you are suffering," he says: "You are experiencing pain." It was narrated from 'Ikrimah, al-Dahhak, al-Suddi, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, and Zayd ibn Aslam similarly.

His saying, the Almighty: "Then they are suffering as you are suffering."

[5923] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim narrated to us, [saying] Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, [saying] Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "If you are suffering, then they are suffering as you are suffering," he said: "If you are being hurt by wounds, then they are being hurt just as you are hurting."

[5924] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, [saying] Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [saying] Muhammad ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "Then they are suffering, then they are hurting," meaning: the polytheists, "as you are hurting."

His saying, the Almighty: "And you expect from Allah."

[The first view]

[5925] My father narrated to us, [saying] Abu Salih narrated to us, [saying] Mu'awiya ibn Salih narrated me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talha, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And you expect from Allah what they do not expect," meaning: you hope for good from Allah. It was narrated from al-A'sha that he interpreted "expect" as: reward.

The second view:

I read to Muhammad, [saying] Muhammad narrated to us, [saying] Muhammad informed us, from Bukayr, [from] Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "And you expect from Allah," meaning: the companions of Muhammad, "[you expect] life, provision, martyrdom, and victory in the worldly life."

His saying, the Almighty: "What they do not expect."

[5926] And by him, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "What they do not expect," meaning: the polytheists.

His saying, the Almighty: "And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."

Its interpretation has already preceded.

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book with the truth."
