He brought them the she-camel, for which there was a drink, and for you, a drink of a known day. He said: "So leave her to eat on the land of Allah and do not touch her with harm." They all acknowledged her, and that is [the meaning of] His saying: "But We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance," for they had acknowledged it out of hypocrisy.
8669 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: The she-camel which Allah brought out for them remained with her calf in the land of Thamud, grazing on trees and drinking water. So Salih said to them: "This is the she-camel of Allah [as] a sign to you, so leave her to eat on the land of Allah and do not touch her with harm, lest a painful punishment seize you."
His saying, the Almighty: "A painful punishment."
8670 - ‘Isam ibn Rawwad al-‘Asqalani told us, Adam told us, Abu Ja‘far told us, from al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas, from Abu al-‘Aliyah regarding His saying: "A painful punishment," he said: "Al-alim" (painful) means "muji‘" (tormenting) throughout the entire Qur’an. This is how it was explained by Ibn ‘Abbas, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim, Qatadah, Abu Malik, Abu ‘Imran al-Jawni, and Muqatil ibn Hayyan.
His saying, the Almighty: "And remember when He made you successors after ‘Ad and settled you in the land, [and] you take for yourselves palaces from its plains and carve out homes from the mountains."
8671 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali both said: Waki‘ told us, from Isma‘il, from Abu Salih regarding "and carve out homes from the mountains," he said: [They were] skilled in carving them.
8672 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "and carve out homes from the mountains," he said: They used to tunnel homes into the mountains.
His saying, the Almighty: "And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
8673 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding "And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption," he says: Do not commit abuse on the earth.
8674 - Muhammad ibn Yahya told us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ told us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And do not commit abuse on the earth," he says: And do not walk about on the earth spreading corruption.
