- 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Hamzah told us, Habban told us, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, from Sharik, from Khusayf, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His statement: "But when He gave them a righteous child, they attributed partners to Him in what He had given them," he said: Allah is the One who created you from a single soul and made from it its mate to dwell in serenity. When Adam covered her, she became pregnant. Iblis came to them and said: "I am your companion who caused you to be expelled from Paradise. You must certainly obey me, or I shall surely make for her the two horns of a beast, and it will emerge from your womb and split it open. I will surely do this, and I will surely do that!" He frightened them, saying: "Name him 'Abd al-Harith (Servant of the Harith)." They refused to obey him, so the child was born dead. Then she became pregnant again—meaning the second time—and he came to them again and said: "I am your companion who did what I did. You must obey me, or I shall surely do this, and I shall surely do that!" He frightened them, but they refused to obey him, and the child was born dead. Then she became pregnant for the third time, and he came to them again and reminded them of it. The love of having a child took hold of them, so they named him 'Abd al-Harith. That is the meaning of His statement: "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them."
- Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ibn 'Uyaynah informed us, he said: I heard Sadaqah say: My father—meaning Ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Kathir al-Makki—narrated from al-Suddi, he said: This is among the connected and detailed [narrations], the statement: "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them." He said: This is the affair of Adam and Hawwa'.
- My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar told us, Sufyan told us, from al-Hudhali, from al-Suddi, regarding His statement: "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them," he said: They are Adam and Hawwa'.
- Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, he says: Allah says: "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them," meaning in the names.
- My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la told us, Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman told us, from his father, Bakr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Muzani told us, regarding "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them," that Adam named his son 'Abd al-Shaytan (Servant of the Devil).
- Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' told us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding "They attributed partners to Him in what He had given them," he said: It was shirk in obeying him, and it was not shirk in worshiping him. And al-Hasan used to say: They are the Jews and the Christians; Allah provided them with children, so they turned them into Jews and Christians.
