8975 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani reported, Sufyan reported, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Qatadah, that he heard him in the Mosque of Kufa saying: This verse was revealed: "O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger and betray your trusts," [it was] revealed regarding Lubabah ibn 'Abd al-Mundhir when he gestured towards Banu Qurayza that it was [a matter of] slaughter.

8976 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us—in what he wrote to me—Asbagh reported, Ibn Zayd reported, regarding the saying of Allah the Almighty: "O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger," he said: He forbade them from betraying Allah and the Messenger, as the hypocrites did.

The second interpretation:

8977 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Dahhak reported, al-Walid reported, Maslamah ibn 'Ali reported, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, regarding the saying of Allah: "Do not betray Allah and the Messenger," he said: It is the failure [to provide] the weapons in the military expeditions.

His saying, the Almighty: "And the Messenger."

8978 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih reported, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih reported, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding: "O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger," he said: And the Messenger, he says: By abandoning his Sunnah and committing acts of disobedience to him.

8979 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Amr reported, Salamah reported, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: And Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr: "O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger," meaning: Do not show Him of the truth what He would be pleased with from you, then oppose Him in secret regarding something else, for that is the ruin of your trusts and a betrayal of your own selves.

His saying, the Almighty: "And betray your trusts."

[The first interpretation]

8980 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih reported, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih reported, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And betray your trusts," and the trust is: the actions which Allah has entrusted to the servants, meaning: the obligatory duty. He says: Do not betray, meaning: Do not fall short in them.
