[The Words of the Almighty: "To restrain you"]

[The First Interpretation]

8995 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih (the scribe of al-Layth) narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "And [remember] when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you," meaning: to bind you. It was narrated from Qatadah something similar.

[The Second Interpretation]

8996 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah mentioned it, Hajjaj narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ata and Ibn Kathir informed us regarding "to restrain you," that it means: to imprison you. It was narrated from al-Suddi that he said: to confine you and bind you.

[The Words of the Almighty: "Or kill you"]

8997 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding "to restrain you, or kill you, or evict you [of Makkah]," meaning the disbelievers of Quraysh when they desired that for Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) before he left Makkah.

[The Words of the Almighty: "Or evict you"]

8998 - My father narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us, Hisham ibn Yusuf informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ata informed me, from Ubayd ibn Umayr, that Abu Talib said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Do you know what your people have plotted against you?" He said: "Yes, they plotted to imprison me, or kill me, or expel me." He said: "Who informed you of this?" He replied: "My Lord." He said: "What an excellent Lord your Lord is! So treat him well." He (the Prophet) said: "Am I to treat Him well, or is He the One who treats me well?"

[The Words of the Almighty: "But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners"]

8999 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas (the client of Banu Hashim) narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr (Zunayj) narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr regarding "But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners," meaning: So I plotted against them with My firm artifice until I saved you from them.
