9014 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, he said: And Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr: "Or bring us a painful punishment," meaning: with some of what You punished the nations before us with.
[The Words of the Almighty: "Painful (Alim)"]
9015 - Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-Aliyah, regarding His saying: "Alim (painful)," he said: The "Alim" is the "Mu'ji'" (causing pain) throughout the entire Quran. And the like of this has been narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim, Abu Malik, Qatadah, Abu Imran al-Jawni, and Muqatil ibn Hayyan.
[The Words of the Almighty: "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them"]
9016 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, al-Muthanna ibn Mu'adh al-Anbari narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abd al-Hamid, the associate of al-Ziyadi, who heard Anas ibn Malik say: Abu Jahl said: "O Allah, if this is the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment." Then it was revealed: "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them..." [the verse].
9017 - My father narrated to us, Abu Hudhayfah Musa ibn Mas'ud narrated to us, Ikrimah ibn Ammar narrated to us, from Abu Zumayl Simak al-Hanafi, from Ibn Abbas, he said: The polytheists used to circumambulate the House and say: "Labbayk, O Allah, Labbayk, Labbayk, You have no partner," and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say: "Enough, enough." They would say: "You have no partner, except a partner who is Yours; You possess him and what he possesses." They would say: "Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness." So Allah the Almighty revealed: "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness." Ibn Abbas said: "There were two securities for them: the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and seeking forgiveness. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed, and seeking forgiveness remained."
9018 - My father narrated to us, Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Salamah ibn Nubayt informed us, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them," he said: Meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
9019 - Muhammad ibn Ammar narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Tanafisi narrated to us, Salamah ibn Nubayt narrated to us, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them," he said: The polytheists who were in Mecca."
