Abu Salih Abd al-Ghaffar said: Some of our companions narrated to me that al-Nadr ibn Arabi narrated this hadith to him, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas.

9026 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas, regarding "And why should Allah not punish them?" He punished them on the Day of Badr with the sword.

9027 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani narrated to us, Ya'qub al-Qummi narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa'id ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abza, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in Mecca, so Allah revealed, "But Allah would not punish them while you are among them." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out to Medina, so Allah revealed, "And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness." There remained a remnant of the Muslims who stayed in Mecca. When they left, Allah revealed regarding him, "And why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct from the Sacred Mosque..." [up to the verse] "...the righteous." Thus, He permitted him to conquer Mecca, and that is the punishment which He had promised them, and it is His saying: "And why should Allah not punish them?"

9028 - Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "And why should Allah not punish them?" He says: And how could I not punish them while they do not seek forgiveness?

9029 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and Uthman ibn Ata', from Ata', from Ibn Abbas, "And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness." Then He excluded the people of polytheism, saying: "And why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct from the Sacred Mosque."

9030 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Isma'il ibn Abi Dirar narrated to us, Abu Tumaylah narrated to us, from al-Husayn ibn Waqid, from Yazid al-Nahwi, from Ikrimah and al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness," it was abrogated by the verse that follows it: "And why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct from the Sacred Mosque?" So they were fought against in Mecca, and they were afflicted with hunger and siege there. It was narrated from Zayd ibn Aslam something similar.

الحواشي

(1). In the original, it is written: (End of the third volume of the Tafsir of the Imam Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim). It is followed, God willing, by the beginning of the fourth [volume] with the verse: "While they obstruct from the Sacred Mosque."
