For we came to a wave from the sea, in its midst... Ahabish among them, bare and armored.
Three thousand, while we were a small group... three hundred, if they were numerous, then four.
9055 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhri, Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatadah ibn al-Nu'man, Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hayyan, Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Amr ibn Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad, and others of our scholars informed us, they said: When the companions of Badr—the companions of the pit from Quraysh—were afflicted and Abu Sufyan returned to Mecca with his caravan, Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi'ah and their brothers at Badr walked [to the people] and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, Muhammad has caused you loss and killed your best ones, so assist us with this wealth, perhaps we may recover from him some of what he has inflicted upon us." They did so, and concerning them Allah the Almighty revealed: "Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah..." until the end of the verse.
His saying, the Almighty: "To avert [people] from the way of Allah."
9056 - Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed me—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "To avert [people] from the way of Allah," and it is Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
His saying, the Almighty: "Then they will spend it, then it will be for them a regret."
9057 - And through the same chain from al-Suddi: "Then they will spend it, then it will be for them a regret," he says: Remorse on the Day of Resurrection.
His saying, the Almighty: "Then they will be overcome."
9058 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Miqdam narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Bakr al-Bursani narrated to us, Sulaym ibn Nufay' al-Qurashi narrated to us, from Khalaf Abu al-Fadl al-Qurashi, from the writing of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, he said: The word of Allah: "...will be overcome," he informed them of their punishment by killing in this world, and by the Fire in the Hereafter.
His saying, the Almighty: "And those who have disbelieved will be gathered to Hell."
9059 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas, he said: They are the disbelievers whom Allah created for the Fire and created the Fire for them, so the world turned away from them, and Paradise was forbidden to them.
